Metals have a tendency to loose electrons as if they gained electrons they would first of all require a good number of them ,the energy for which will be very much .Taking example of sodium (11)-1s^2 ,2s^2 ,2p^6,3s^1
In order to be stable it needs 7 electrons .So instead it looses 1 as ionisation energy is less in that case.

ATOMS HAS TENDENCY TO LOSS ELECTRON , BECAUSE ALL THE ATOMS ARE ALWAYS WANTS TO GET THE NEAREST INERT GAS ELECTRON CONFIGARATION..
SO THE LOSS ELECTRON TO GET THE SIMPLEST ELETRON CONFIGARATION AND BECOME STABLE.
