The only thing mitosis relies on to produce variations in the offsprings is the small probability that DNA is not replicated correctly.

Meiosis, on the other hand, has a crossing-over stage in Prophase-1 called ‘pachytene’ where chromosomes exchange some part of the DNA before reaching offspring cells. Plus, gamete fusion also increases variation.

So, mitosis WAS important for evolution when it was the only reproductive mechanism, but now, with sexual reproduction, mitosis doesn’t cause appreciable variations necessary for evolution.
