Mitochondria are named as strange organelles as they have their own DNA and ribosomes.  

  Though they are one of the cell organelles they are capable of functioning as a whole new cell due to the presence of DNA and ribosomes that can synthesize proteins that are required for the cellular function.  

  The "mitochondrial DNA" can be preserved through evolutions and thereby is mostly used for phylogenetic tree construction of organisms.
