The lunar cycle changes visibly because its position relative to observer (you and me) and the source of light (the sun) changes. ... When the moon's orbit places it between Earth and sun we cannot see the part that is illuminated. As it orbits Earth our perspective of it changes and we gradually see more of it (waxing)
