the moon shines because it can reflect light. if it weren’t uneven, it would be a shiny, smooth, spherically-shaped mirror. in that case it would capture the light of the sun in the form of a triangle, where the base of the triangle would lie on the sun and its vertex would lie in the center of the moon. in this way two points arise on the moon’s surface, namely where the straight lines of the triangle intersect the moon’s surface on the way to the center of the moon. consequently, only the part of the light on the moon’s surface lying between the two points would be reflected. but since the moon shines as a complete whole, its surface cannot be flat and smooth.
