Because black color is one of the least enticing of colours. In fact it is not enticing at all if worn loosely. It is obligatory for the Muslim women to conceal the contours of their physique. Black does it very nicely. However wearing black burqa is not a strict obligation. The women Sahabis(companions of Prophet Muhammad (A'laihissalatu wassalam) used to wear crow black, as they were the most vigilant in observing the religion of Islam. You get the idea when you see overly obese people wearing black to hide their obesity. The same applies for women when they are trying to hide their beauty as a code of modesty. Hiding body contours is also obligatory for the men, by the way. And ALLAH knows best. Thank you.
