Why must the focal length of objective and eyepiece be small?

The objective lens of a microscope is the one at the bottom near the sample. At its simplest, it is a very high-powered magnifying glass , with very short focal length. The eyepiece lens is so named because it is usually the lens that is closest to the eye when someone looks through the device.
