Why does not NaHCO3 react with phenol?
What does Google know about me?
Phenol does not react with the base NaHCO3 despite being an acid. Because…
In the following reaction:-
Phenol + NaHCO3 -> Sodium Phenolate + H2CO3
The products obtained are sodium phenolate and carbonic acid.....
Let's consider, the set of acids and bases:-
Acid : phenol & H2CO3
Base : NaHCO3 & Sodium phenolate
If we compare relative strength of any of the two pairs, the right hand side acid/base would be stronger;stronger acids|bases are unsatble in comparison to weak acids|bases...product elements being stronger would give reactants, thus the reaction is favourable in backward direction.....hence, the forward reaction does not occur.
Hope this helps^-^
