The Nazi attack on the USSR is a historic blunder for two reasons.

1. This attack extended the war to two sides of Germany rather than one, thus making it harder for Hitler to focus on two fronts of the war. The USSR from the east, and the Americans from the west. the caused Germany to be stretched too thin  economically and is a major reason of why they lost the war.

2. As bad a decision as this attack was, Germany could have taken over Russia and its oil fields if they had prepared for the Russian winter. Their soldiers were not equipped with winter clothes or enough food to make it through. This resulted in mass death from the cold. In some places it was so bad,soldiers resorted to eating their fallen comrades
