Trees including the Neem (Azadirachta indica) have gum ducts and cavities in the sapwood. It is the gum that you see on the tree. Each species of tree or plant that produces a gum, resin or latex does so for the plants' protection. It is an an exudate in which waste products of the plant's metabolic processes are deposited. If the plant is wounded by a boring insect the gum has antibiotic, antifungal and antiviral properties that protect the plant.
Neem gum ducts are known to rapidly develop in response to a trauma followed by fungal infection.
