Explanation:

Why does (NH4) 2CR2O7 not release oxygen on heating? On which factor does the release of oxygen depend?

The thermal decomposition of a substance would give the most stable produces.

The thermal decomposition of (NH₄)₂Cr₂O₇ gives N₂, Cr₂O₃ and H₂O according to the following chemical equation:

(NH₄)₂Cr₂O₇(s) → N₂(g) + Cr₂O₃(s) + 4H₂O(g)

N₂ is more stable than O₂ because of the strong N≡N bond in N₂ molecule. The formation of Cr₂O₃ or H₂O from O₂ is exothermic, and this shows that both Cr₂O₃ and H₂O are more stable than O₂. Hence, no O₂ is formed in thermal decomposition of (NH₄)₂Cr₂O₇ due to the low stability of O₂. Furthermore, if O₂ were produced, it will reacts with Cr and H₂ to form Cr₂O₃ and H₂O.
