Nitrogen forms pentoxide, but does not form pentachloride. ... Nitrogendoes not form pentachloride, because it doesn't possess d-orbital. Formation of any pentahalides requires sp3d hybridisation of the central atom. This is obtained by the excitement of electrons of the central atom to empty d orbital.

the only simple reason for the same that nitrogen can't afford valency of 5 becasue it doesn't have any d orbital!
