The triple bond between the nitrogen atoms is pretty strong

it has a bond energy of 946 KJ/mol

it is tough to break, needs a lot of energy to break those bonds, so reactions are less likely to occur.

Answer:

Nitrogen is inert gas, inert mean non reactive. Due to triple bond, the large charge density between nitrogen atom attracts both nuclei closer to each other, due to that attraction bond become strong. So due to strong bond no reagent can capture the electrons of nitrogen molecules. ... So it is chemically inert.
