Meiosis is also known as reductional division. Meiosis is necessary for sexually reproducing organism to maintain the no. Of chromosome because gametes or sex cells must have half the chromosome than parent cell has this is because during fertilization two gamete fuse to form a zygote.

Hope this helps.

to make cell haploid so that the zygote can be diploid...The reduction of chromosome number in meiosis is a central event in the lives of most eukaryotes, including humans. It makes diploid possible because the gametes that are produced with half the chromosome number of their parent cells can then fuse to form a diploid zygote.
