It was initially believed that the noble gases could not form compounds due to their full valence shell of electrons that rendered them very chemically stable and unreactive. All noble gases have full s and p outer electron shells (except helium, which has no p sublevel), and so do not form chemical compounds easily

Explanation:Noble gases are chemically unreactive gases because they have complete octet in their outermost shell i.e. electronic configuration of ns^2np^6. So they don't form molecules as formation of molecules is a general way of reducing the energy and attaining a stable form but noble gases don't need to acquire lower energy because of their chemical inactivity. But there are some exceptions as Xenon forms oxides and florides.
