The Zeeman effect is magnetic effect. The electrons in the atoms acts like tiny magnet because of their spin. If there are even number of electrons in a atoms, spin of atoms cancel each other. Hence there is no magnetic effect in the atom. Atoms having odd numbers of free electrons in the orbit, there is resultant magnetic moment in the atom hence Zeeman effect can occur.
