It is so because the rivers Ganga, Indus, and Brahmaputra, while moving downward from the Himalayas, erode the river banks and carry silt along, later depositing it further in the northern plains.

northern plains are called depositional plains because the plains were formed by deposits of three rivers and their tributaries these 3 deposits are now the fertile deposits so they are called depositional plains
