Cones are small photo receptors present inside the eyes. They are responsible for the color detection and help us see different colors. We are able to see colors in light only because, when we look at a certain object in light, the wavelength of the light that comes back after hitting the object and hits our cones inside the eye determines the color we will see.

Hence, light is important in order for us to see different colors.

Answer:

Colours are sensed by special photo-sensitive receptors located on the retina of the eye called Cones.

Explanation:

Light is sensed by two types of light-sensitive receptors located on the retina of the eye :

  • Rod Cells :
  1. It contains the pigment called rhodopsin.
  2. It is adapted to function in dim light.
  3. It is sensitive to light and gets degraded on exposure to light, so it cannot sense any visible wavelength of light.
  • Cone cells :
  • It contains the pigment called Iodopsin.
  • It can sense all the wavelength of visible light and hence can detect and differentiate between colours.
  • But it can operate only in the presence of bright light.
  • It cannot function in dim light.

This is the reason why colours can be sensed only in bright light.
