The medium of the outer space is vacuum. That is there's no small sized scattering particles which can scatter and refract light for further propogation.
Thus, only the rays of sun propogate in vacuum and are also visible however not scattered and thus the outer space remains balck in colour.

Because the outer space is too much empty is several galaxy are within it but they are much less than the space .
for example if you are left alone very big auditorium and a small torch is lighted you will notice it as a small star in space, compare the auditorium with space and the torch with star (sun).......You will find your answer
