Paddy (unmilled rice)  requires a constant supply of water and even if we keep supplying water from artificial irrigation sources yet due to the scorching temperature of sun,  the water level will reduce due to evaporation. So, the rice plants will be devoid of water which will hamper its further growth and development. So, Paddy can be grown only in summer season and rainy season only. Rice is a kharif crop and paddy fields are infact a flooded parcel of arable land. This land is used for growing semi-aquatic rice.

India has the largest paddy output in the world and is also the fourth largest exporter of rice in the world. Kaveri delta region of Thanjavur is historically known as the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu and Kuttanadu is called the rice bowl of Kerala.

Paddy requires a lot of water, so it can only be grown during rainy season.
