Answer:

It grows well in clayey soil as it has a lower percolating rate. That means it's water holding capacity is very high

Reason Why?

Every crop has it's own characteristics and requirements in case of soil, amount of water, minerals and nutrients available. Also, they vary from each other, on the basis of seasons like the Rabi and Kharif crops.

Paddy is a Kharif crop and requires a lot of water in order to grow and mature. It sis also known as Semi-aquatic plants, because they grow in flooded fields. As it is a staple crop, all the necessary requirements are provided to the crop for best results. When it comes to soil, Clayey black soil is the most suitable for Paddy crops. Because Clayey soil can hold the water for longer time because of lower percolating rate. This helps the roots to get water faster for basic metabolic processes. So, let's explore a bit more about paddy or rice crop:

  • In India, Rice is the staple food for majority of the people. Also, India is the second largest producer of Rice after China.
  • In India, Rice is generally cultivated in areas with clayey soil and high annual rainfall. It is generally grown in Northeastern, Central and Eastern India.
  • It requires high temperature, and high humidity with annual rainfall of 100 cm atleast. Also, it can grow in areas of well-developed irrigation system.

⚡This is good news for all the Indians that Northern states which are mostly dry and arid areas has made it possible to grow rice with the development of canal irrigation and tube wells. Some of these states are Punjab, Haryana, Western UP and some parts of Rajasthan.
