Why part of alimentary canal is specially modified for absorption? What are these modifications ?

As alimentary canal is also called digestive tract.

small intestine contains thousands of finger like projections , called villi . on a villus (singular of villi ) , microvilli are present . these projections increase the surface area for absorption of food.
