Reasons for more reactive of PCl_5

  • The structure of PCl_5 has two types of bonding namely equatorial bonds and axial bonds.
  • The equatorial bonds lie in the same plane and appear linear.
  • On the other hand, the axial bond is longer than the equatorial bonds due to which it is weak as well as experience a high force of repulsion.
  • Due to the above-mentioned factors, PCl_5 is more reactive.
