I think Radiohead are exceptionally good at writing fairly vague lyrics. That coupled with their constant drive to create new sounds and atmospheres often reads as depressing to those who don't pay much attention to their music.
Though I really like their experimental approach towards music, I wouldn't dub them as 'the greatest band of all time'
However, I agree that their music really does 'speak' to the soul.
People who despise Radiohead usually reason along the lines of “too depressing, not dancable” in otherwords, NOT MAINSTREAM.
Generally people don't prefer 'heavy' music with 'complicated musical arrangements' or 'iconic guitar riffs'. People usually like short pop songs with catchy hooks and bridges, they don't search for good rock songs with deep meaningful lyrics!
Sadly, rock music is dying :(
