Every month or so, the uterus lining gets thicker to prepare for a fertilized egg if the woman becomes pregnant. If the egg doesn't get fertilized, that lining is released from the body as blood through the vagina. This monthly process is called menstruation or a period.

if the egg is not fertilised it leaves for about onw day.the uterus prepares itself every month to recieve a fertilized egg. thus the lining of the uterus becomes thick and spongy.if fertilization does not take place it slowly breaks and comes out through the vagina as blood and mucous. this cycle takes place roughly every month and is known as menstruation it last for about 2 to 8 days.
