Answer:

The breakdown of protoplasm is known as plasmolysis. When plant cells are placed in a hypertonic solution, the cytoplasm along with the plasma membrane withdraws from the cell wall because of outflow of water from the vacoule. The vacoule shrinks but is still enclosed by cytoplasm. In dead cells, plasmolysis does not occur because the protoplasm has shrunken to such an extent that it has reached the stage of evident plasmolysis in which the cell cannot be deplasmolysed again in a hypertonic solution. It is irreversible process.
