Political parties perform an important task in government.

✔️They bring people together to achieve control of the government, develop policies favorable to their interests or the groups that support them, and organize and persuade voters to elect their candidates to office.

✔️Although very much involved in the operation of government at all levels, political parties are not the government itself, and the Constitution makes no mention of them.

✔️The basic purpose of political parties is to nominate candidates for public office and to get as many of them elected as possible.

✔️Once elected, these officials try to achieve the goals of their party through legislation and program initiatives.

✔️Although many people do not think of it this way, registering as a Democrat or Republican makes them members of a political party.

✔️ Political parties want as many people involved as possible.

✔️Most members take a fairly passive role, simply voting for their party's candidates at election time.

✔️Some become more active and work as officials in the party or volunteer to persuade people to vote.

✔️ The most ambitious members may decide to run for office themselves.

Parties are necessary in a democracy because of the following reason.

1.Parties perform a variety of function such as they contest election, gather different views, make laws, forms and runs government, shape public opinion, role of opposition, and provide people access to government machinery,

2.If there is no party in a democracy then all the candidates will be independent. So no one will be able to make promises to the people about any major policy.

3.the government may be formed be formed but its utility will remain uncertain.

4.Elected representative will be accountable to their constituencies but no one will be responsible for how the country runs.

5.The rise of political party is directly linked to the emergence of representative democracies. As we have seen large scale societies need representative democracies.

6.As societies become large and complex there is a need of some agency to gather different views on various issues and to present these to the government.

Hence we can say that parties are a necessary condition for democracy.
