Premchand or the timeless Munshiji has been epitome of Hindi literature in the world. Largely because:
He was born in the Gandhi-Nehruvian era and pretty much saw what was coming in form of movements and abolition of nonsensical and stereotypical rituals. He didn't live long enough to see a free India (unfortunately died in 1936) but was a diehard patriot which is evident in his stories and characters(eg.Maiku/मैकू).A genius with the pen, his stories encompassed everything in the universe. You could always relate to the stories and characters with the protagonist taking the centre stage. I would clearly see a biscope while reading his stories. The detailing of each character was as if he filled life in them. As if he grew up with themA profound Urdu scholar, his writings have tinge of one of the most beautiful languages in the world in every possible way.Anecdotes about him wearing a shoe from which a toe protuded out are real. He was a private man without property, wealth. He had artistic instinct. His son was also a noted author. So didn't try to mint money out of his father's name. Hence his novels and collections are available at almost every book shop and is published by even the local publishers.
