he election process of President is more extensive process than Prime Minister who is also elected indirectly (not electedby people directly) by the Lok Sabha members only. ... The election is held in accordance to the system of Proportional representation by means of the Single transferable vote method.

the president is only the nominal head ,having direct elections for him would create unnecessry hassle and waste of resources specially when the real powers are vested in the prime minister and the cabinet.
