we celebrate diwali as the festivals of light because on this day lord rama returned to ayodhya after 14 years by killing rawan and this was the day of amavasya ( moon was not naked ) therefore peoples of ayodhya lighted ayodhya with lamps . in hindi we can say that we celebrate this festival as burae par accae ki jeet . for this reason we celebrate diwali .
