Because they don't contain mitochondria, red blood cells don't use any of the oxygen that they transport,but instead the red blood cells produce the energy carrier ATP by the glycolysis of glucose and lactic acid fermentation on the resulting pyruvate.

Red Blood Cells are the oxygen carriers. They help in the transport of oxygen to all parts of a body. If they consume oxygen, they won't be able to transport the oxygen to all parts and hence the cell can't transport oxygen and so, the body will began to lose oxygen and will soon die. So, the RBC transports the oxygen and doesn't consume it.
