  • Reservation is required for SCs and STs in order to give representation to even the backward classes of the country.
  • They may not have the required resources, education and contracts to contest and win elections against others.
  • Reservations helps our parliament to have representation of all communities.
  • Currently,in the Lok sabha,84 seats are reserved for the Scheduled Castes and 47 for Scheduled Tribes. (It was 79 for SC and 41 for ST before 2009 General Elections.)
  • In many states, seats in rural(panchayat) and urban (municipalities and corporations) local bodies are now reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBC) as well.
  • Similarly, minimum one-third of the seats are reserved in rural and urban local bodies for women candidates.
