All living beings require energy to live. We take in food such as bread, potato etc. which contains carbohydrates. These are broken down into simpler substance by our body. These simpler substance are further broken down in to form glucose. This glucose combines with oxygen in the cells of our body and provides energy. The special name of this reaction is respiration.

 C_6H_{12}O_6 + 6O_2\xrightarrow{} 6CO_2 + 6H_2O + energy
