In respiration, glucose is broken down into CO2 and H2O. The reaction is exothermic because the C=O and O-H bonds in the products are so much more stable than the bonds in the reactants( glucose and O2)... Thus energy is released because more stable compound is formed and stable compounds have less energy thus energy get released making the reaction exothermic.
C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O (glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water).
