The rock cycle is driven by entropy, or to put it another way, the system is seeking greater disorder. Since it is not operating in a closed system, and it has energy input from external sources such as the sun (which drives weathering) it sometimes moves toward higher order (e.g. crystal form of minerals).

Another major energy input into the rock cycle that is actually a form of entropy, is radioactive decay. As radioactive elements decay they form smaller and smaller atoms, adding to the entropy (disorder) of the system and releasing significant amounts of heat that drives igneous rock formation, plate tectonics, and metamorphism, which are all parts of the rock cycle.
