because gold was most malleable & ductile metal which can be converted into thin sheets & through thin sheets alpha rays could easily scattered, bombarded & pass.

drawback:-
1. he didn't explain the position of electron.
2. he didn't explain distance between electron & nucleus.
3. he didn't explain about shell i.e. k,l,m,n.
4 he didn't explain about stability of atom.

<>Ernst Rutherford selected gold foil for his experiment.

<> This is because he wanted a layer as thin as possible.

<> The gold foil was highly malleable.

<> Hence ,it was suitable for getting the desired results that Rutherford wanted.

Drawbacks :-

<> While revolving around the nucleus in circular paths , the electrons would undergo acceleration.

<> During acceleration , the electrons would radiate energy.

<> As a results , the electrons would lose energy and gradually fall into the nucleus.

<> If this were so , the atom would be highly unstable and Hence , matter wouldn't exist.

<> Also ,this model didn't explain about the energy of electrons and their distributions in different shells
