Why salt is used in pickles for preservation

Pickles mixed with salt creates a hypertonic medium.So microbes entering it loose water by exosmosis becomes plasmolysed and hence dies.So by this way pickle can be preserved for longer time.

Sugar and Salt are known as preservative as they contains some water particles which helps the food to be preserved.
