The self-inductance of the coil will increase when the coil is wounded onto a soft iron material such as a ferromagnetic core than one wound onto a non-ferromagnetic or a hollow air core.

If the inner core is made up of the soft-iron core such as nickel and cobalt then the inductance of the coil will increase immensely due to the same amount of current flowing through the magnetic flux would be stronger.
