why semiconductor is used instead of conductor

The free electrons make it a very good conductor of electricity and also of heat. ... In Conductors, there is full flow of current (Zero resistance). Semiconductors, can act both as an insulator as well as a conductor based on the voltage input. Hence, there is a possibility to control the current flow in semiconductors.
