Magnesium ribbon is cleaned before it is burnt in order to remove the coating of basic magnesium carbonate so that the ribbon combined with air to burn readily

Hi friend,
When you store a Mg ribbon it reacts with oxygen present in air and forms layer of MgO on ribbon which is stable and as it is stable it prevents reaction (burning in air ) from occurring in order to prevent this we clean Mg ribbon.
