why should a magnesium ribbon be cleaned before burning into air?

Hi magnesium ribbon should be properly cleaned before burning.... because as in coming with contact with air .....it becomes of another compounds...which can effect the results of any chemical reaction........so if we clean it then we can react only with pure form of magnesium.
