equation should be balanced to verify the law of conservation of mass . This law says that after chemical reaction atoms cannot be destroyed. eg. 4Na +O2 gives 2Na2O

Chemical equation must be balanced to obey Law of conservation of mass which states that

" Mass is neither created or destroyed in a chemical reaction "

In other words, total mass of reactants = total mass of products.

For example :

consider the balanced equation :

2H2+ O2 ---> 2H2O

mass of reactants = 2x 2+ 32= 4+32= 36u

mass of products = 2 [ 2x1+16]= 2x18 = 36u

∴total mass of reactants = total mass of products
