sky is blue because molecules in the air scatter blue light from the sun more than they scatter red light. When we look towards the sun at sunset, we see red and orange colours because the blue light has been scattered out and away from the line of sight.

After days of rain, a patch of blue skyis a sight for sore eyes. ... Blue light (shorter wavelengh) is scattered more than red light (longer wavelength). So, when the Sun is high in the sky, bluelight is scattered in all directions as sunlight passes through the atmosphere and we see the sky as blue.
