Pure silver in any form will also tarnish if exposed to air because
of the sulfur in the air, not the oxygen.
Coins, ingots or bars covered in airtight plastic
or other containers won’t tarnish.
Jewelry, teapots or cutlery made of silver are always exposed to air and
will get black more quickly because the silver surfaces combines with sulfur to form
a very thin crust. The back is easily removed with silver polish
under various brand names including my favorite “Brasso.”
The same products also work on removing the green from copper and brass.
Gold on the other hand does not tarnish and remains shiny forever.
