Because his soldiers didn't have enough sense to come in out of the rain.
Siraj-ud-daulah became Nawab of Bengal in April 1756, at the age of 23. He was suspicious of the British East India Company who were fortifying their trading posts in the region. He ordered them to stop: but the British, who were nervous about a French attack on their bases, refused.
On 20 June Siraj led an army of 50,000 men to attack the British outpost at Calcutta, defended by about 500 troops. He easily captured it, then plundered and looted the city while bringing about the deaths of 123 British prisoners in the infamous 'Black Hole of Calcutta'.
