Why socl2 is prefferred for the preparation of alkyl halide from alfohol?

SOCl2 or thionyl chloride is preferred for preparation of alkyl halides from alcohols as the reaction gives SO2 and HCl which are gaseous in nature and thus escape from the reaction medium, leaving behind pure alkyl halides.
