Sodium and chlorine fall in the same period in the modern periodic table because:

They have the same number of shells which is 3

What this means is that atoms of both elements have 3 shells.

And all elements in a period have same no. of shells so, all elements in period 1 will have 1 shell and in period 2 will have 2 shells...
