Sodium and potassium are very reactive metal. They react with oxygen present in air to form its oxide. It reacts so vigorously that sodium catches fire. When it is kept in water, it reacts with water to form Sodium Hydroxide and releases hydrogen. In this case the heat released is in high amount which causes hydrogen to catch fire immediately. Thus to prevent accidental fire it is kept in kerosene oil.
