Because it has 1 electron in its outer most shell.

priyanka95: and why sodium has only one valence electron? :/
sunilsingh1587: Because its atomic no. is 11. Therefore its electronic configuration will be 11 = 2,8,1.

Because it's atomic number is 11

Therefore it's configuration is 1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 3s^1

Since it's "3s¹" that means one valence electron.
