during chemical reaction each atom tries to gain octet or duplet state to form ion in that process only

sodium forms ion when it donates 1 electron.
fluoride forms ion when it gains 1 electron

due to donating sodium ion is smaller than its atom
due to gaining fluoride ion is bigger than its atom
